HELP! Had to have my cat put down, dont know what happened.?
Last night I came home and my cat had collapsed. Hubby said had been acting funny that day, and was hiding. 9 yrs old, no health problems but a virus when i rescued him, and had been abused. he was extremely cold, breathing shallow, had been walking sideways b4 collapse. he tried to walk after and his front paws, not back, would not work. he lost all muscle tone. could not blink. think he went into coma on way to vet, but became alert at vet and started howling. had not been showing signs of pain, but then when i held him was just crying. temp was in low 90s, heart at 118. doc said had a heart attack but never saw a cat hang on after that. never had heart problems, no poisons present, totally indoors. doc said could be minutes, but i had him euthanised cause he was obviously in pain. everything i have read talks about rear leg involvement with heart issues. i have two other cats and am scared. looked like a stroke but doc said no. any advice, or similar situations? thanks.
An embolism is a blood clot which can cause blockage in the legs. It can be associated with a malfunction of the heart. Unfortunately sudden, unexplained death can only be determined by a necropsy (sometimes not even then).
Don’t worry about your other cats right now – chances are they will not have the same thing happen – ever.
That’s a terrible, shocking loss and you have my sympathies.
