Small Pets
Can anyone recommend to me any small pets?
I’d like a small pet that doesn’t get sick easily. I had a hamster that went through wet tail and it was horrible. How likely is it that mice and rats get tumors and should I just get another hamster? Any suggestions on any other small animals? Thanks.
I suggest a rat if you want a small pet.
The pros of rats…
- They’re VERY smart
- They’re easily trained (even litter box trainable)
- They are incredibly fun
- They’re very loving
- They’re inexpensive to buy and take care of
- They don’t take up much space and can be contained in a cage
The cons of rats…
- They don’t live too long (3 years max., usually)
- They tend to develop tumors or respiratory diseases towards the ends of their lives if they’re not properly taken care of
- Their cages can smell if you don’t clean regularly
- They’re escape artists
- They’re prey to cats and dogs
I’d definitely suggest a rat, nonetheless. They’re very social creatures, though, and love company, so it’d be best if you got two from the same litter. Be sure to get them from a breeder, as well, so you don’t buy one that already has an infection or respiratory disease. (Many pet stores mass breed them, use harmful bedding for the rats’ lungs, and don’t look after them properly).
